Exploration & Development of Self-Expression
& Self-Esteem:
Participants learn to express themselves as individuals through
music and performance while developing unique creative skills.
Understanding Ourselves and Others:
Participants learn West African, Afro-Cuban and Brazilian cultural
traditions, the roles of music in those societies and their influence
on American culture.
Music Skills:
Participants learn West African, Afro-Cuban and Brazilian drumming
technique & rhythms, rhythmic meter, syncopation, dynamics,
hand care and drum maintenance.
Discipline:
Participants develop discipline (defined as the ability to use energy
along with self-control to achieve positive outcomes) by working
and practicing to gain drumming skills.
Accountability:
Participants are responsible for their own behavior, attendance,
punctuality, practice and success in Drum Power. However, we encourage
them to use the knowledge they gain to be responsible for all aspects
of their lives especially academic achievement.
Goal Setting:
Participants learn to set their own short and long-term goals by
outlining what they would like to achieve in the program and in
the future.
Self-Reliance:
Participants must focus on their own growth and choose to employ
their own energy.
Thinking & Reasoning:
Learning and replicating rhythms and musical arrangements requires
mental development and concentration.
Physical Health Maintenance & Development:
Developing drumming technique requires coordination, dexterity,
physical training and stamina.
Cooperation & Team Work:
Participants learn to work together as an ensemble of performers
which allows them see the real importance of team work first-hand.
All three musical styles require collaboration through the rhythmic
parts, which fit together and support one another.
Positive Energy Focus:
Participants have a positive point of focus for energy and stress
release.
